The African Hornbill Conservation Alliance was established as the US-based fund-raising arm of Mabula Ground Hornbill Project to support various African hornbill conservation projects, primarily focusing on ground-hornbills. The AHCA was created when the IUCN SSC Hornbill Specialist Group highlighted the large gap in basic knowledge of biology and conservation status and conservation action for many of Africa’s hornbill species. The Alliance team bring a multidisciplinary strength to ensuring that the plight of African hornbills is known and action-supported. Working towards the common goal of protecting African hornbills through collaboration with in-country conservation organisations that focus on hornbill conservation.
Cultural Icons – Farmers of the Forest
There are 32 hornbill species in Africa, found across most of sub-Saharan Africa. All hornbill species are characterised by unique features and life history strategies, such as cavity nesting and large, sometimes colourful beaks and distinctive calls.
Hornbills are keystone species and play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystems. Because of their slow reproductive rate and need for tree cavities, climate change, loss of large trees, and other human-related pressures have put hornbills at risk of regional population decline.
However, given the similarities in the life history traits and physiology of hornbill species, the strategies that can be applied to mitigate some of the threats can be applied across multiple species through multinational collaboration.
The AHCA fund-raises for the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project and organisations that align with our vision to conserve African Hornbill species through fundraising and 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsorship. MGHP’s work aims to slow and reverse the decline of the Endangered Southern Ground-hornbill, through a multi-faceted approach addressing education, population monitoring, the mitigation of their most dangerous threats, facilitation of solutions to human-wildlife conflict, and a rearing and reintroduction program to bring the Southern Ground-hornbill back to its historic range.
CURRENT CAMPAIGNS:
The Abyssinian Ground-hornbill Conservation project was founded in response to the lack of information on Abyssinian Ground-hornbills and the urgent need for their conservation due to habitat loss and wildlife trade. The project focuses on research and deploying mitigation strategies to halt their decline. The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project manages the Project in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
