Adopt a ground-hornbill group

Each symbolic adoption directly supports our efforts to protect and support breeding Southern Ground-hornbill groups in South Africa.

ADOPT A WILD GROUP

Help secure the future of a wild group of ground-hornbills by symbolically adopting a wild group.

By adopting a group, you help us perform annual nest checks, ensuring the viability of their nest for the next breeding season, which is important as they only breed when the conditions are perfect.

You also support ongoing group monitoring by funding the equipment to monitor these groups.

You also contribute to supporting the ground-hornbill custodianship programme, which ensures that the hornbills living amongst people are safe on this land, through threat mitigation and education and awareness programs for residents.

ADOPT A FOSTER GROUP

By symbolically adopting a foster group, you ensure the future stock of ground-hornbills being reared for release.

Foster groups are non-releasable ground-hornbills that are kept at our rearing facility to socialise the young releasable birds, to ensure that they learn all the natural behaviour needed to survive unaided in the wild.

So although foster ground-hornbills won’t be released back into the wild, they play an important part in securing the future of ground-hornbills that will be released into areas where they have gone locally extinct. By adopting a foster group you support us by securing food and vet bills, enrichment, artificial nests and maintenance of the baobab-rearing facility

ADOPT A REINTRO GROUP

Adopting a reintroduced group ensures the successful rewilding of hand-reared ground-hornbills.

By adopting a reintroduced group you support annual nest monitoring, building and supply of a soft release aviary, supplementary feeding during the dry season when there may not be enough natural food in the area and tracking equipment.

As reintroduced groups need monitoring for the first couple of years, this package also supports the salary of a dedicated ground-hornbill monitor, as well as the establishment of custodianships in the area that they are released into, to ensure threat mitigation and awareness in the area.

Support Abyssinian Ground-hornbill conservation

The Abyssinian Ground-hornbill Conservation project was founded in response to the lack of information on Abyssinian Ground-hornbills and the urgent need for their conservation due to habitat loss and wildlife trade. The project focuses on research and deploying mitigation strategies to halt their decline. The Mabula Ground Hornbill Project manages the Project in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.

We are seeking donations to support ongoing research and students.

Support African hornbill research and advocacy

African hornbills are threatened by unsustainable international trade.

To combat the unsustainable trade in African hornbills and their parts, we need to understand the current levels and mechanisms of trade. For this, we monitor African hornbill trade and capture this through the Hornbills in Trade Database, which informs our mitigation measures.

CITES CoP20

Recently, Nigeria successfully submitted a proposal to list all hornbills in two of the most traded genera, Bycanistes and Ceratogymna on CITES Appendix II. This is a massive step towards strengthening the regulation around hornbill trade. To fully leverage CITES CoP 20 (November 2025, Samarkand, Uzbekistan), the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project in collaboration with Nigeria would like to host a CITES CoP20 “side-event” to bring key stakeholders together to discuss how to implement stronger trade regulation in source and import countries.
