Silver Pendants
Emson Mujuru created the beautiful Ground-Hornbill. He was trained in carving at the Driefontain Mission, Zimbabwe. Although trained in wood he can carve in any medium. He is inspired by nature and all around him. He created the original in wax – from which a rubber mould was made.
The pendants are made using the lost wax technique which dates back to the Egyptians. Jerum Dube has worked in silver for over 40 years. He made all the wax moulds for the ground-hornbills, making sure they were all perfect. The original is carved in wax from which a rubber mould is made, which picks up all the detail. Molten wax is then injected into the cavity and when cool is removed from the rubber mould. All waxes are then made into wax trees. This is encased in “investment powder” and placed in a furnace. All the wax melts and is replaced with molten silver. It is then cleaned and polished. This initiative supports master craftsmen like Emson and Jerum.
Every hand-finished solid sterling-silver ground-hornbill brings a little joy – all proceeds go to the conservation of this endangered species and support the artists who created these little masterpieces.
