The African Hornbill Conservation Alliance is governed by a dedicated board of directors, bringing their diverse skill sets to ensuring the best governance and greatest impact of the funds donated to the African Hornbill Conservation Alliance. Together the board has experience in governance, bird rehabilitation and education and marketing and are all deeply passionate about hornbills.

Chien-Li Chung

Director

Chien-Li Chung is a senior non-profit executive with over 25 years of diversified experience in health and education who incorporates strong technical skills with significant experience in operational and development areas. He has worked with USAID in Africa and Asia and developed his foundation experience with a “Big Four” public accounting and management consulting firm. Mr. Chung has an MBA from Columbia University and is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in the Republic of Namibia.

Hillary Hankey

Secretary

Hillary Hankey started Avian Behavior International, now the Avian Behavior Conservancy, as a comprehensive resource for avian education and conservation. A master falconer and overall bird enthusiast since a young age, Hillary and her team teaches interactive conservation education with birds near San Diego California. They produce free flying bird programs for zoological parks and serve wildlife rehabilitation organizations, zoo teams, and other animal behavior enthusiasts through a science based learning program, the Avian Behavior Lab. Hillary is on Board of Directors of the Indonesian Parrot Project and runs the Avian Behavior Conservancy. Hillary is currently enrolled in a Masters Program at Colorado State University for Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology.

Ann Knutson

Treasurer

Ann Knutson is a seasoned zoologist and conservationist with extensive experience in avian management and species conservation. As the Zoological Manager of Birds at the Dallas Zoo, she oversees bird care, staff training, and participates in key conservation programs, including serving as SSP and Studbook Keeper for the Southern Ground Hornbill and Violet-backed Starling. Ann started the African Hornbill SAFE program to help garner more support for hornbill conservation within the AZA community. With a Bachelor’s in Biology from UC San Diego, Ann is dedicated to advancing hornbill conservation through her work with the African Hornbill Conservation Alliance.

Krystle Kemp

Marketing

Krystle Kemp is a Los Angeles-based marketing director with a focus on balancing brand aspirations and business objectives through a strategic approach to communication. Her areas of work include growth marketing, ecommerce, content strategy, and brand strategy. 
She works closely with brands to understand and guide their growth goals, crafting  multichannel marketing strategies, and establishing defined budgets and KPI’s to profitably achieve results.

At the core of our mission to conserve the Southern Ground-Hornbill is a passionate group of conservationists, researchers, and environmental advocates working tirelessly to ensure the survival of this iconic bird. Each member brings a unique blend of expertise, enthusiasm, and commitment to this critical cause.
